MIRAI - Contactless Health Monitoring for Seniors

Where seniors independence meets family peace of mind. Wellbeing made simple.

MIRAI is a monitoring system that detects vital signs of elderly as well as falls that may occur at home, and healthy environmental conditions.

MIRAI ensures timely intervention in case of need for elderly that might be living alone unsupervised, providing peace of mind to caregivers and ensuring elderly's independence and privacy while staying safe.

MIRAI contactless health monitoring system helping a senior family member stay safe at home

She gave you her best years.
Now technology can help you take care of her — gently, privately, continuously.

Senior living independently in bedroom with MIRAI health monitoring technology

Our Promise

  • Dignity first – no video, no "surveillance" feeling
  • Family peace of mind – proactive alerts, not constant anxiety
  • Caregiver support – more signal, less noise
  • Technology that disappears into the background

Is MIRAI for me?

Aging at home should feel safe — not watched.

Most solutions today either:

  • Depend on wearables (that people forget to charge or wear), or
  • Use cameras and microphones, which feel invasive and compromise privacy.

MIRAI is different.

We use millimeter-wave radar and environmental sensors to quietly understand what's happening in a room — no cameras, no microphones, no wearables.

Everyday Scenarios

MIRAI health monitoring scenarios: bathroom fall detection, living room vital signs monitoring, and integrated home care

Bathroom – MIRAI Fall Sensor

  • • Detects sudden falls or collapses on hard floors
  • • Alerts family if someone remains on the floor too long
  • • Monitors humidity and temperature, which can impact safety

Living Room – MIRAI Vital Signs Sensor

  • • Monitors heart rate, breathing, oxygen levels and body temperature
  • • Sends alerts when an abnormal condition is detected
  • • Tracks air quality that may affect respiratory conditions

Both Sensors Working Together

  • • Vital Signs Sensor tracks ongoing health status while seated
  • • Fall Sensor detects transition zones (walking, moving between rooms)
  • • The MIRAI Monitoring App consolidates both into a single, clean view

How It Works

MIRAI millimeter-wave radar technology explained: contactless sensing without cameras or microphones

Millimeter-Wave Radar (mmWave)

Both sensors use mmWave radar to detect micro-movements (chest motion from breathing and heartbeat, body posture, falls) by measuring tiny distance changes in the millimetre range.

  • ✓ No visual data
  • ✓ No audio recording
  • ✓ Works in the dark and through non-metal obstacles such as clothing

Sensing Technology

The Vital Signs Sensor also integrates:

  • SpO₂ module – estimates blood oxygen level
  • Body temperature sensor – tracks thermal changes
  • Environmental suite – temperature, CO₂, VOCs, humidity

These are combined with radar data to provide a more complete picture.

Edge Processing & Privacy

  • ✓ Most processing is done on-device (edge)
  • ✓ Only relevant, anonymised data or alert conditions are sent to the app
  • ✓ Data is encrypted in transit and at rest
  • ✓ No raw camera or microphone data because none is used

Meet the MIRAI Team

Where MIT innovation meets human-centered care

The MIRAI project was born at the EPGM Program at MIT Sloan School of Management, where a multidisciplinary team came together around a simple but urgent idea: aging should be safe, dignified, and private — enabled by technology that respects people.

Our team brings together expertise in medicine, engineering, artificial intelligence, product innovation, entrepreneurship, and real-world caregiving, combining deep technical knowledge with personal experience supporting aging loved ones. Together, this group has been co-designing the next generation of remote-care technology — a system built not around cameras or surveillance, but around millimeter-wave sensing, on-device intelligence, and absolute respect for personal space.

MIRAI Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about MIRAI health monitoring system

Does MIRAI use cameras or microphones?

No. Neither device has a camera or microphone. Both use radar and other non-imaging sensors.

Do people have to wear anything?

No. Everything is contactless and non-wearable.

Can it see through walls?

No. The sensors are designed for a single room and specific installation area.

What happens if there's a fall?

When the Fall Sensor detects a potential fall or collapse, it triggers an alert to the Monitoring App. Families or caregivers can then check in by phone or in person.

Is this a medical device?

MIRAI is being developed to meet relevant safety and performance standards. It is not a medical device yet. Regulatory classification and approvals may vary by region and are part of our roadmap.
